Mercedes-AMG SL – The Icon Rejuvenated

November 23rd, 2021 by

Nearly 70 years ago, the first Mercedes-Benz SL stunned the world with its styling, dynamics, and remarkable technology directly derived from dominant showings in motorsport. The SL has stood as one of the automotive world’s most revered icons, and all generations have captivated their contemporary and even current generation of fans. Now developed by Mercedes-AMG, the new SL carries on from its prolific predecessors as the next superlative of sportiness, comfort, luxury, and useful technology.

The proportions of the exterior are timeless in their balance of elegance and sporting intent, but with the smooth grace of Mercedes-Benz’s modern design. Perhaps most notable is the reintroduction of a soft top roof and the 2+2 seating configuration, both features not seen on an SL since the R129 fourth generation (1989-2001). This adds a striking visual element and is more lightweight than a folding metal arrangement, the roof can also be raised or lowered in 15 seconds at speeds up to 60 km/h. Further aiding the lightweight approach is the completely new aluminum chassis and body. Not only designed to be more rigid than the preceding SL and AMG GT Roadster; the new SL also utilizes all-wheel drive and four-wheel steering for the first time in the model’s history.

The interior transforms the tradition of the groundbreaking 300 SL Roadster into the modern era, seamlessly combining sporting virtues, luxurious finishes, and intuitively progressive technology into a hyperanalogue experience. The latest generation of MBUX infotainment is standard on all SL models and learns the habits and preferences of its users to optimize use over time. The fully digital instrument cluster too is new and is integrated into a three-dimensional visor for added ease of use. The 2+2 seating configuration offers more room and functionality for everyday use, and the standard leather seats – equipped with AIRSCARF as standard – are more sculptured than past examples. AMG Performance seats are also available as an option.

Upon its Canadian launch, the SL 63 4MATIC+ will output 577 bhp and 800 Nm of torque. This power is produced by a revised version of the proven 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine and is sent to all four wheels via an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9G transmission. More variants are to come, among them will be powerful and innovative hybrid offerings.
